The English Linguistic Society of Japan (hereinafter referred to as ELSJ) is dedicated to contributing to the progress and development of synchronic and diachronic study of English and linguistic theory. Our mission is to contribute to the development of a better society through disseminating and publicizing the academic results of the group’s activities. To fulfill this mission, the ELSJ and its members (hereinafter referred to as the Members) have a societal expectation to be aware of their social responsibility as researchers, to conduct fair research activities, and to act appropriately. This Code establishes the code of conduct to be observed by the members of the ELSJ in their activities.
Social Responsibilities of Researchers
Article 1 (Respect for human rights and compliance with laws)
In conducting research and activities at the ELSJ, Members shall be aware of their social responsibilities as researchers, respect human rights, and comply with laws and regulations pertaining to privacy and intellectual property rights.
Article 2 (Ban on discrimination)
Members shall not engage in any discriminatory language or treatment based on age, gender, nationality, or disability.
Article 3 (Ban on harassment)
Members shall not engage in acts that constitute harassment.
Article 4 (Publication and dissemination of research results)
Members shall make an effort to widely disclose and distribute academic results obtained through the activities of the ELSJ to society.
Research Activities
Article 5 (Fraud prevention)
In the course of their activities at the ELSJ, Members shall comply with the Guidelines for Deterring Misconduct in Research Activities established by the ELSJ, and shall conduct research according to appropriate objectives and methods.
Article 6 (Responding to survey subjects)
When conducting research or surveys involving human subjects, Members shall consider and be accountable to the human rights and privacy of the subjects.
Article 7 (Appropriate use of research funds)
When using research funds, Members shall comply with the rules and regulations established by their affiliated institutions, etc., and shall also handle such funds appropriately in the course of their research activities at the ELSJ.
Activities of Academic Societies
Article 8 (Freedom of mutual criticism)
Members shall not interfere with the freedom of mutual criticism for the purpose of furthering scholarly discussion.
Article 9 (Moderation in language and behavior during discussions)
Members will be moderate in their speech and behavior in academic discussions, and shall not engage in behavior that may harm the character of the other party.
Article 10 (Development of research skills)
Members shall endeavor to improve their own research skills through the activities of the ELSJ, and members in leadership positions in particular shall endeavor to foster the development of younger members.
Article 11 (Fairness in reviews, screenings and related activities)
Members shall endeavor to ensure the fairness and transparency of reviews, screenings and related activities, and in the duties of examiners and others engaged in the activities of the ELSJ.
